It should be apparent to all that it will be new technologies that will save the American auto industry from certain ruin.

Ford, for one, understands that. That is why the automaker intends to expand the use of its new EcoBoost engine to 90 percent of its models by 2013.

The EcoBoost engine uses turbocharging and direct injection of gasoline in a manner that offers more power in a smaller engine. Ford said that it can reduce fuel consumption 20 percent compared with a conventional engine. The new engine will replace the larger engines being used by Ford including V8s. The EcoBoost engine will be a V6.

The technology used in the EcoBoost improves fuel economy and Ford expects to build as many as 700,000 units a year by 2013 and 1.3 million worldwide. Watch for the EcoBoost engine to appear in the Ford Taurus and Flex and the Lincoln MKS sedan and MKT.

The technology will also be used on 4 cylinder engines and a new fuel-efficient V6 is expected as well.
