Toyota Halts Manufacturing in Japan as Car Sales Stay Slow

The misery of the auto crisis has crossed the Pacific and has caused Toyota to stop production at all of its Japanese plants for 11 days during February and March. Obviously there is a supply and demand problem here. There are just too many cars as the global demand shrinks.

This is the first time that Toyota has curtailed production since 1993. Back then demand for Japanese cars dropped due to the rising value of the Yen.

Our take? Don't be surprised if the automaker issues even more stops. 2009 is looking, unfortunately, like an "interesting" year per that pessimistic Chinese proverb.
