It looks like Brazil has become the Saudi Arabia of ethanol.

The South American country is the largest exporter of ethanol in the world.

This position was achieved through serious actions taken by the Brazilian government. For example, the country has invested nearly $5 billion in ethanol, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy, producing more than 12 billion liters a year. More importantly, the government had also mandated that 2 percent biodiesel be added to all diesel sold in Brazil with the rate of the mix to be increased to 3 percent by July. Capacity for biodiesel production reached 2.993 billion liters a year in November.

There are now a total of 46 biodiesel production plants in Brazil.

About 90 percent of the light vehicles produced in Brazil can run on ethanol and more than 25 percent of the nation’s light vehicle fleet runs on ethanol.
The makes the country the third largest biodiesel market in the world.
