Pundits -- and many an auto enthusiast -- state that General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler are in the predicament they are in partially because they make lousy cars. Wait a minute! If that’s so then why are models from the Detroit Three being considered for the 2009 North American Car and Truck Of The Year Awards?

That’s right, one of the best kept secrets -- U.S. automakers make good cars.

The models getting the nod include the Ford Flex, the new F-150, and the Dodge Ram.

Winners are selected by a panel of North American auto journalists and the selections will be announced at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
