When the execs of the Detroit Three went hat in hand to Capitol Hill asking for a handout, we admit that the ignorance of some of the senators who questioned the execs surprised us. Biggest shock? That some of these senators were not aware of the gains made by the domestic automakers as far as fuel efficiency was concerned.

Well, we hope that those senators are eating crow.

It seems that Ford’s new Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrids have been rated a fuel efficiency of 41 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway by the Environmental Protection Agency. That actually beats the rating given to the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway.

Our take? It seems that the achievements of our automakers as far as miles per gallon is concerned is the best kept secret in the world.
