A major selling segment of the GPS navigation products are the portable units which can placed on the dashboard or attached, using suction cups, to the windshield of the car. Problem is some states like California did not allow such attachments.
But there is a new state law that goes into effect on January 1 that will allow these units to be placed on the windshield -- actually on particular parts of the windshield. According to the law, there are two locations considered to be legal: within a 7-inch square section on the lower part of the windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle or within a 5-inch square section in the lower corner of the windshield on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Some people have tested these locations and have found that the best is the section on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The mounting area on the passenger side is just too far away to view properly from the driver’s seat and the location on the driver’s side surprisingly is well located as far as viewing and keeping one’s eyes on the road are concerned.
