Honda goes Sporty with FC Sport at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show

One word rang again and again at Honda's press conference at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. The word? Sporty.

Dan Bonawitz, vice president of corporate planning and logistics, introduced the all-new Honda Insight Hybrid which goes on sale in Spring 2009.  You would think that the Insight's fuel economy, which is similar to the Honda Civic and Toyota Prius, and even lower price would be enough for consumers.

But no. Bonawitz, as well as later speakers, harped on how Honda was a "fun" and "sporty" brand. Uh, excuse me? Yes, there are the S2000 and the Civic Si, but neither come to mind among regular buyers who are Honda's bread and butter.

Most likely, though, Honda's communications staff was trying to prep the media for the FC Sport Concept. Inspired by the FCX Clarity sedan, the Sport is a fuel-celled powered sports car whose more likely inspiration is the mouth-watery (and true) Tesla Roaster.

We're still sorting through all the press material, images, and our own photos. My initial impression is the FC Sport resembles some futuristic Lamborghini.

That is, until you see the rear. I'm still not too sure what to make of it.
