BMW debuts MINI E at 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show

After Nissan, the photographers and I moved to BMW's press conference.

First off, it was standing room only. Second, the number of press has grown in the past few years. This is my fourth LA show, and I don't remember this many folks covering at past shows. More thoughts on that later.

Anyway, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, CEO and Chairman of BMW, opened the conference. Vehicles unveiled included the 7-Series and the MINI E coupe.

The latter is an electric vehicle, one of many on the "green trend" still sweeping the auto industry. I'll provide more stats later, but the MINI E can go zero to 60 in 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 95mph. Range is 185 miles -- various safety features such as shutting off the battery if the "bonnet", or hood, is lifted.

Other vehicles discussed include the 7-Series Hybrid and diesel versions of the BMW 3-Series and X5. More details to follow.

Next: Honda.
