After raising itself out of joke stock, Hyundai is now making a serious bid at sportiness with its first, new, rear-wheel drive coupe.
The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe was constructed liberally with high strength steel. This means the coupe’s curb weight is well below its competitors and touts a better suspension system than the E46 BMW’s M3, which is saying something, assuming it’s true.
Hyundai claims its new coupe weighs in at around 3,402 lbs, the closest competitor being the 2009 BMW 335i, which tips the scales at 3,571 lbs. More significantly, if Hyundai’s claims can be credited, the 2010 Genesis Coupe will have a better power to weight ratio than all of its competitors: such as the 2009 Infiniti G37, 2010 Camaro LS, 2009 Dodge Challenger SE and BMW, of course. Its light weight also gives the sporty coupe a decent mileage of 25 miles to the gallon.
The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe comes as the 2.0T and 3.8 models, and both come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Both models can run on regular unleaded gasoline. A five-speed automatic comes with the 2.0T, and a six-speed auto for the 3.8.
Our take? Hyundai’s making a serious bid to unseat tried and proven competitors here.
