Many car makers are looking at how they can provide Internet access from their vehicles. Ford and Chrysler have introduced such vehicles and companies are experimenting with the use of WiFi to help in the connection.

Now comes word that Volkswagen will be showing a Tiguan which allows Internet access at the International Suppliers Fair in Germany.

The project is called auto@web. The crossover is in constant contact with an Internet portal which offers it current, pertinent information. Access to the portal also allows the Tiguan user to check if the car’s doors are locked and if the tank is full with gas. User can down load a map to their cellphones or iPods. The system also gains access of a city event calendar and can reach out to various search engines.

Our take? We see a lot of safeguards being placed on such devices before going on the market.
