Is Chrysler already making decisions with an eye on a possible merger with General Motors?
According to AutoWeek, the troubled automaker introduced two hybrid electric vehicles last summer, the Chrysler Aspen and the Dodge Durango SUVs.
Now comes word that Chrysler is killing both.
Is the cancellation caused by the merger or not? Probably not. You see, Chrysler slated the vehicles to be manufactured in a Chrysler plant in Newark, Delaware and that plant has already been scheduled to be closed at the end of 2009. So one might think, okay, you still have next year to continue with the models. But now Chrysler will be closing the plant even sooner -- at the end of this year. So that’s the end of the electric hybrid Aspen and Durango.
Again, our two cents. If Chrysler knew it was going to close the plant in Delaware, then why did it assign the hybrid Aspen and Durango to be made there? It certainly sounds like a major waste of time and money. Another example of some of the bone head decisions made by the U.S. auto makers during the last few years.
