Natural Gas Toyota Camry to debut at Los Angeles Auto Show

Ever since oilman T. Boone Pickens went on television with his campaign to end America’s dependence on foreign oil, we’ve been hearing a lot about the use of compressed natural gas as a fuel alternative to gasoline.

Pickens argues that it is better for the country to use natural gas because we have it in abundance right here. We don’t have to import it.

Sounds good. Use what we have here so we don’t have to depend on some foreign country. But there are problems. First, there is only one car being sold in the U.S. that runs on CNG. It’s made by Honda and it is being sold in only a few regions around the country.

Well, it seems that there is some relief concerning one of the problems. Toyota has announced that it will be showing a natural gas Camry hybrid concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month.

How nice. But the secondary problem still remains. there are only about 500 stations nationwide that offer CNG. Also, cars powered by natural gas have fuel tanks that are very large and hold relatively little fuel. That affects the driving range of a CNG car.

Toyota does not have any plans to build more of these cars or to release it to the public. Hmmm. Wonder if they don't want any competition with their hybrids....
