2001 Hyundai Elantra Slammed by Two Airbag Recalls

If you own a 2001 Hyundai Elantra, a potential double whammy is waiting to smack your car. If you own a 2002 model, then you only have to worry about one.

Hyundai-Kia is issuing two recalls affecting 225,000 total vehicles for 2001-2002 Hyundai Elantra’s.

The first recall affects an estimated 150,000 2001 Hyundai’s. If liquid is spilled into the cup holder—a likely place as any—the fluid can drip down to neuter the airbag sensor, rendering the airbags un-deployable in times of need.

The second recall affects both 2001 and 2002 models and also relates to faulty airbag deployment. If materials are under the front seat, the side impact airbag wiring harness mounted under each front seat could malfunction during a crash, leaving you to splatter in a nice shade of red.

Dealers are ready with fixes. Call the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
