We're not too sure how we feel about this idea.
Lexus is Toyota’s luxury brand and it has already built a reputation as being one of the “greenest” in the auto industry. Now comes word that Lexus will soon be a hybrid only line.
Lexus currently offers three hybrid models -- the LS 600h, the GS 450h, and the RX 400h crossover. In order to go fully hybrid, other models that are not yet offering a hybrid variant will be when those models are updated. That would include the IS sports car; the GX and LX SUVs, and the ES sedan. The SC hard-top convertible, a non-hybrid, is said to be near the end of production, and Toyota has said that it has not yet decided to continue the model.
In addition, Lexus is expected to show a hybrid vehicle based on the Prius at next year’s Detroit Auto Show. Moreover, a new generation RX crossover is expected to be introduced with a hybrid model within the next year. Finally, there is also talk that the company will release a small hatchback to compete with the BMW 1-Series and Audi A3. And pundits are suggesting that this car be a plug in hybrid.
So what's our hesitation? Lexus is a luxury brand while hybrids tend to appeal to the more mainstream folks where mpg is more of an issue. Does Toyota think the "green" appeal of hybrids is enough to entice folks who can afford luxury cars and the premium gas powering them? The Lexus LS 600h, while a technological cornucopia, has be derided for its laughable gas mileage as a hybrid, with the GS not significantly better.
Would you buy a luxury hybrid? If so, why when you have enough cash to afford gas.
