All of us want to discover ways to reduce our fuel consumption. And many of us may be fanatic about it. But how many intend to be in the Guinness Book of World Records?

John and Helen Taylor did just that. Driving a new Volkswagen Jetta TDI and following tips they developed with Shell, they were able to achieve a fuel economy rating of 58.82 miles per gallon.

Nice. And even nicer are those tips. They include:

  1. Drive smoothly. No more accelerating at those stop signs.
  2. Replace dirty or clogged engine air filters.
  3. Keep the engine well tuned.
  4. Make sure tires are properly inflated.
  5. Jettison the excess weight. Bye bye ski rack.
  6. Use the recommended grade of oil.
  7. Use a high quality gasoline. Huh. You mean there's bad gasoline?
  8. Avoid idling. (Good luck during traffic hour.)
  9. Don’t travel at speeds greater than 60 miles per hour. Course, you lose all the fun of driving....
  10. Combine your trips.
  11. Pay with a credit card. Except for your car. Unless it's legal.
