We’ve been so pre-occupied with the current Wall Street meltdown and dismal sales in the auto market that we almost forgot that Chrysler will be releasing a new Dodge Challenger.

But it's out and reviews have been generally positive. However, for all of you who were hoping to see a Challenger convertible, it ain’t going to happen. But what will happen is that the car will have a range of choices of engine and trim including a V6 which is said to be “relatively” efficient.

The Challenger V6 with SE trim will  have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $21,195 and the Hemi with SRT8 trim will be priced at $37,995.

Chrysler was considering a convertible version of the car, but execs determined that extra weight would have had to be added with the top removed and they just didn’t want to go in that direction. The fact is, the Challenger is heavy as it is coming in at 4,100 pounds. The platform used for the Challenger is the same as the one for the 300C and the Charger. Too much more weight would adversely affect performance as well as fuel economy.
