The fluff and feathers haven’t changed much, but Hyundai has completely revamped the fourth generation Sonata in everything that matters.
The 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder engine has been upgraded to get variable valve timing and a small boost in hp and torque, from 162 to 165 hp and 164 to 168 pound-feet respectively. It also now comes as a five speed transmission with an EPA-rated 22/32 city/highway. A manual version is available as well.
The V6 got a boost as well, rated at 249 hp, up from 234; torque is up from 226 to 229 pound-feet. EPA ratings are slightly worse at 19/29 city/highway. This only comes as a five-speed automatic.
The suspension was improved; the interior was trimmed and expanded; iPod and USB connectivity are now available; and there is always that swaddling for those little bundles of joy, safety.
Still, the biggest advantage of the Sonata lies in its $18,700 price tag, which is a few thousand dollars below the leading Japanese competitors.
Our take? No one is going to mistake the Sonata as a sports ride any time soon. Nonetheless, economic appeal is a powerful tool in these times of uncertainty.
