Question: If you are a foreign auto manufacturer with plants in the United States, how do you train new employees in doing things your way?

You send them to one of your plants in the U.S. and have the employees there assist in training them.

Toyota Motor Corp. finds itself in this scenario because it will be opening a new plant in Blue Springs, Mississippi in 2010. More importantly, it will be the first Toyota plant in the North American market to manufacture the supra-popular Prius hybrid.

Most of the employees will be trained is in Georgetown, Kentucky. Still, some new ones may travel to Japan to visit the company’s Tsutsumi plant. There, they will watch the Prius being assembled.

Toyota has hired some hourly workers for the new plant that include maintenance and skilled trades personnel. Most of the line workers, though, won’t be hired until the spring of 2010.
