Auto Industry, States Educate Drivers on Saving Fuel

There was a time when U.S automakers didn’t care how much gasoline was consumed. And drivers didn’t, either. But now gasoline is hovering around $4 a gallon, and both parties understand that the days of devouring gasoline are over.

With that in mind, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers have decided to join Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger of California and Bill Ritter of Colorado to get consumers to do things to reduce the consumption of gasoline. The Alliance and governors are urging drivers, for example, to inflate their tires to the proper level, tune their engines, replace air filters, and slow down.

The group has introduced a website (ecodrivingusa.com) discussing these points.

Other ideas found on the site include calls to avoid tailgating; how to accelerate and brake properly; and understand the relationship between the air conditioner and whether or not to lower the windows. It is said that one can save 12 cents a gallon alone by properly inflating tires, and 40 cents a gallon if owners replace their air filters when needed.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is a trade association that represents 10 major auto makers including Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and Toyota.

Our take? We wonder if these tips are also being taught at Driver's Ed.
