While the Volkswagen Beetle is, for we Americans, synonymous with the peace and love set, it has become equally iconic in Mexico as "el vocho", the Mexico City taxi.
The latest green regime of the city, however, cites the classic Beetle as the primary source of pollution in their city. The fact that the car, as diminutive as it, on average only attains 19 mpg does it no favors either.
Thus the city has begun a program where it offers driver the equivalent to $1,500 to turn their cars into scrap metal. It seems drivers are receptive to the idea as well, the running costs of the old cars becoming excessive.
Our take? Too bad it won't be like the black cabs of London where the replacements are modern interpretations of the original.
