Sometimes it takes an individual who is not involved with a particular industry to step in and save it. Perhaps it is because they aren’t tied up in the politics of the trade or they are not blinded by past history or tradition. Whatever the reason, there appears to be two automobile outsiders who think that they can save the Detroit Three from their wows.
The two saviors are T. Boone Pickens and Andrew Grove.
We think that most of us know who T. Boone Pickens is. He is that oil millionaire and corporate raider. His idea is to have the domestic auto makers construct vehicles that can run on natural gas.
The other savior is Andrew Grove, who was involved in the growth of Intel, the microchip company. His idea is to convert millions of older vehicles to partial electric power. He also favors a major effort by the auto makers to construct plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.
Both men also call for more government assistance for the auto makers.
Our take? Get on the automakers' boards and you'll quickly discover why the Detroit Three are failing real, real, bad.
