Customer Satisfaction Leaving U.S. Models

American automakers need to start paying more attention to what their overseas rivals are doing because we’re just not getting it right; kidding ourselves otherwise will not be productive.

A recent survey depicts Asian and European automakers making gains in customer satisfaction, but Americans losing ground.

Lexus, which was rated as the highest quality automobile luxury brand, tied with BMW as the top scorer according to the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index. They reign with a score of 87, and Toyota and Honda trailing second at a close 86.

GM’s Buick and Cadillac, and Ford’s Lincoln and Mercury lines dropped to 85.

While the margins between scores are minimal, the actual experiences delivered to customers can be several years’ difference in performance. American automakers have been working hard to improve their image, but it seems the tightening straits have spread their resources thin to maintain their progress.

The industry average score is 82, unchanged from a year ago.

Our take? The American people have spoken. Pull it, or tank it.
