You know that phrase, “When things get tough, the tough get going.” Well, with today’s auto industry the way, being "tough" means cooperating with rivals than going it alone.
Witness the latest idea from Daimler and BMW. The former's head of research is calling on other auto makers to agree on common components such as battery suppliers and to share R&D.
He also said that governments should show more flexibility as far as emission standards are concerned. This will assist auto makers in reducing costs because they have to customize cars to comply with different regulations.
Our take? Whether it's through competition or cooperation, the consumer, ultimately, will benefit from the automakers' struggles to remain profitable.
