In a sluggish economy, exports are lifeblood that can generate much needed cash flow and bolster sagging sales (ask General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler). This point is certainly not lost on any of the major automakers as the U.S. market has slumped.
Even Toyota is now looking outward from its domination of the U.S. market. Sales of its Tundra and Sequoia have slowed to a crawl and inventories have built up to unacceptable levels. Tundra sales, in particular, fell 15 percent as of July 31.
Given the weak dollar, the automaker joins a list of companies that are considering exporting some of its vehicles outside the U.S. market. This is helped by an agreement between automakers and the United Auto Workers union which has lowered costs and made American plants more competitive without as-high labor wages.
Chrysler, GM, and Volkswagen all have plans on exporting, or already are, domestically manufactured automobiles overseas.
