Question: How can one improve the Toyota Prius and make it an even more green vehicle? Answer: Add a conversion kit that permits it to burn E85 ethanol fuel.

A company based in the Neatherlands, Green Fuel Systems, is the latest to join a number of companies offering flex fuel (FF) conversion kits for the Prius. Flex fuel is another name for ethanol, an alternative fuel based off plants.

Before you call your bank to refinance your house for such a kit, note most cost less than a $1000. The conversion kit offered by Change2E85, for example, costs less than $500. The package includes a video that describes how to install the product. AAMCO also has a flex fuel conversion kit. Automaker Ford is even testing a prototype FF Escape plug-in hybrid that achieves 88 mpg burning E85.

Our take? Using flex fuel conversion kits or combining the use of E85 into plug in hybrids can be a major strategy to help reduce the use of fossil fuels. Think about it! Converting a vehicle to flex fuel use that already gets 55 mpg before the conversion can save an awful lot of gasoline.
