Both sides represent vastly different perspectives on patriotism, opulence, personal freedom, ingenuity, lifestyle and misunderstandings. Where the anti-Hummer crowd declaims waste and extravagance, the anti-Prius crowd derides “smugness” and pretentiousness.
The image of cars defining social status has long been a source of contention between different groups of Americans: such as the older and still somewhat existent American versus Japanese car debate. But is there really a point to this struggle?
The Hummer will die an ignominious death as gas prices continue to rise (just ask owner General Motors, who's trying to sell the brand), and evolutions off the ideals behind the Prius will spring forth in greater numbers; just as Japanese cars are now widely recognized as being of higher quality than American cars.
Personally, we bickering over the issue with people who have the legal right in this country to possess and use either vehicle is a waste of time. Why bother?
