Mercedes-Benz S-Class see Rich Buyers Shying Away

In recent months pundits have been talking about the tipping point, the point at which the American driver starts changing his or her routine in order to save on the cost of gasoline. But Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Public may be a far cry from the rich who are able to afford the luxury vehicles like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW and the like. Do they have a tipping point? And if so, have we reached it?

We may have.

Reports are coming in that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the flagship of the august fleet, has suffered a drop in sales. Figures show that sale of the S-Class are down 11.8 percent during the first half of 2008, with sales dropping 23 percent in the U.S., the major market.

M-B owner Daimler is said to be concerned. The C-Class accounts for 20 to 25 percent of all pretax profits. The company is re-routing vehicles away from the U.S. because of the slumping sales.

Mercedes-Benz has some fuel efficient vehicles. This includes the all-electric A and B Class which are scheduled for release in 2010. And there are plenty of reports of its hydrogen programs. However, don't expect those vehicles to be on the rich list's want list for some time.

Our take? Mercedes-Benz just needs some glam to spice up sales. These are the rich we're talking about here. Hey! Is the Donald available for some ad work?
