Electric Autos on the Road Again

Even though General Motors EV1 showed that there was definite interest in an electric vehicle by the public, it has taken more than a decade for them to come to market once more.

According to Daily Tech, nearly all the Japanese brands will be fielding electric cars, as the high population density of their country sees the 90 mile or so range of a typical hybrid as being more than adequate for everyday use. 2009 will see the introduction of electric offerings from both Subaru and Mitsubishi, though the availability of, and design of the cars for other than home markets is questionable. Nissan and Renault, however, have committed to electric motors as being their motor of choice for the future. Unfortunately, it seems that 2012 at the earliest will be when consumers have an opportunity to sample the wares. The exception is Portugal, where the government has taken a proactive approach towards an electric future allowing Nissan and Renault to bring their cars in 2011.

Our Take? Imagine the lead that GM could have know if it had continually updated their EV1, as opposed to simply offering it and letting amount to nothing
