Suzuki Motor Corp. plans on being absent this year following Porsche AG from last year. Their reasons differ but the bottom line is the same: Do they need to make a showing at Detroit?
Porsche doesn’t bother anymore with the Detroit auto show for the very simple reason that they don’t get enough cars sold. Plenty of people come to peer and leer but few are willing to dig into their pockets to buy.
Another undisclosed brand has also been considering dropping Detroit for similar reasons.
Suzuki on the other hand didn’t like the basement that was offered.
Whatever the reasons, it comes down to a single thing: necessity. The American auto market has taken massive hits in the economic slump and carmakers are starting reevaluate making a physical show in Detroit.
So before all the automakers go bye-bye, the Detroit auto show needs to start figuring out how to lure those who can afford pricey $100,000 vehicles. Cocktails are already on the table; strippers might not be amiss either.
