Chrysler LLC is certainly serious about the new endeavor to manufacture electric vehicles.
Under a division called ENVI (pronounced “envy”), the automaker will be producing electric cars including hybrids. Furthermore, the company is spending $3 billion developing more fuel efficient powertrains. This includes a new V6 engine and a dual-clutch transmission that is supposed to offer better fuel economy.
Chrysler is also going diesel in an apparent attempt not to put too many eggs in one basket. For example, the new Dodge Ram is expected to have a diesel option after 2009. Expect any EVs to be available within 3 to 5 years.
Our take? We'll believe it when we see it. Chrysler's survival, both short and long-term, is still very much in the balance.
