In what may seem incomprehensible to Americans --- who may still recall Hyundai's less than stellar initial releases -- but the Korean automotive duo has moved into the number five spot of the world's most productive auto manufacturers.

It hasn't been a surprise to us, though, in the media. Hyundai, hehind only Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen, and Ford, has made a steady rise of the charts. Eleventh in 1999 and sixth in 2006, the company's production of 3,961,629 autos in 2007 has seen it gain a prestigous spot in the top five.

Our take? New products in the pipeline should see the company move past even the American automakers one day. Has Toyota finally met a worthy challenger?
