2009 Hyundai Genesis: Luxury Features Will Not Buy Luxury Class

Korean-car maker Hyundai will be introducing its first luxury car into the U.S. -- the Genesis sedan.

The rear-wheel drive car features a sleek silhouette with luxury car design cues. The silhouette, with a drag coefficient rating of 0.27, makes it better than similar but pricier offerings from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus.

Power comes either from a V6 or V8 engine. The 4.6 liter V8 can generate up to 375 horsepower and 333 lb-ft. of torque. This compares well with the more sporty but still luxurious Infiniti M45 and the BMW 550i though the most direct competitor is the Lexus GS460.

Pricing is the biggest difference. Genesis is expected to be competing with more modest brands like the Chrysler 300C, the Pontiac G8 GT, and the Lexus ES350. Our take is that Hyundai is hoping to snare greedy Americans who want all the luxury of the virtually unaffordable true luxury brands but at midsegment prices.

Will Genesis give such buyers the means? In our opinion, true luxury buyers are looking at the badge and what it represents, not the accrutements.

Really? We have owned every single year S Class Mercedes ever produced since 1986 to 2008, and same goes for the E Class to 87' to 1999. We also have had numerous BMW's, including the first year 07' Twin Turbo 3 Series. Not only are we looking to get the Genesis V8, we drive the Veracruz and Santa Fe more than we drove the BMW. Every time we go to the dealer there are Lexus owners, Mercedes owners, etc, either buying the Hyundai products or planning on it.
What world do you live in? The economy is in the tank. Mercedes reliability is horrendous, and BMW/ Lexus are massively overpriced. Quality slipping in Toyota and Honda products. We are not "one in a thousand." Neighbors who own high line cars constantly look at our Veracruz and wonder what in the world they are paying an extra $500 per month for. You're comments are based on theory. Doubtful you live the lifestyle of affordability of a high line car or you'd know owners lines of thinking.
At one time high line cars represented the cream of the crop in both reliability and image. Those days are gone. People are not stupid. You’re living 20 years in the past.
