Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn said in an interview earlier this month that, “The German carmakers can achieve that.” Current average fleet emissions in all European carmakers are just below 160 grams in Europe.
Unfortunately, customer interest appears to be lacking in low emissions vehicles that produce 120 grams of CO2 or less. VW’s most efficient Golf, the Blue Motion “United” diesel hatchback with 105 hop consumes 4.3 liters of fuel. Nevertheless, the company believes it can achieve figures below 4.9 liters by replacing normal aspirate engines with direct injection turbocharged versions.
The Audi premium brand has also been promised to have its fuel efficiency improved, from 6.7 liters for 100 km to below 6.0.
Winkerton believes that electric cars are definitely the future, has projected such a model for VW by 2010.
Our take? Ford, you there? GM, you seeing this? Hi. Yeah. This is for you. VW should be applauded for its “green” efforts and the EU in general as well. The fractured opinion in the United States shows just how far we need to go.
