Americans are Driving Less as High Gas Prices Continue

Through the years, many groups have called on Americans to drive less and use less gasoline. But we Americans don’t like to be told what to do so we continued to drive and drive and drive.

Now with the cost of gas up to more than $4.00 a gallon, we are definitely getting the hint and driving less.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, Americans drove 22 billion fewer miles from November through April 2007 - 2008 as compared to the same period of time in 2006 -2007.

A lot of people are hoping that this phenomenon is long term.  Experts are saying that people will purchase homes closer to where they work; drivers will drive less long distances and this will mean a change in traffic patterns; and fewer people will be paying the federal gas tax which will cause a decline in funds of the Federal Highway Trust Fund.

Our take? While technology works on the creation of an alternative fuel, perhaps it is conservation that will serve us best in our attempt to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
