Saturn Astra: General Motors Again Challenges Toyota

Left to languish in mediocrity after a successful debut, Saturn is once again becoming the Japanese fighting brand that General Motors hoped it would be.

It is an odd twist of fate then, that the homegrown rival to Japanese domination of the smaller car categories would base its whole product lineup around GM offerings from Europe.

Having become the means to own a European GM here on our shores, its latest flavor for us to sample comes in the form of the Saturn Astra. Though arguably viewed as a staid, every man's car in Europe, it's a breath of fresh air in the American market, akin to when the Ford Focus first hit our shores.

The Astra, available only as a hatchback (albeit in 3 and 5-door guise), offers sporty, European driving characteristics, exemplary fit and finish, reasonable pricing, and style for miles.

Our take? A brilliant move on the part of GM. Its European cars are always competitive in the marketplace, more so than recent offerings here, and to bring them here provide the American consumer with an option outside of the status quo. That alone is often enough to garner sales. With an American market seemingly shifting towards more European sensibilities, Saturn seems poised to become a major player in the marketplace.

Hmm. Someone is wearing rose-colored glasses. The Astra is too little, too late. It's also overweight, underpowered, and its fuel economy is disappointing compared to its rivals, especially considering its power output. The bigger-engined Chevy Cobalt (which it is ironically related to) gets significantly better mileage (especially on the highway, esp. with the XFE model) and offers better power and acceleration. And Astra sales are not exactly burning up the sales charts, even as its rivals such as the Focus and Civic are.

Also, without Bluetooth and a sat-nav system, it's falling even further behind the class leaders, one of which (the Mazda3) is due for a radical makeover that will catapult this class leader even further ahead, making the Astra but a distant speck in its rear-view mirror.

I bought one last week and I totally love it. It's a great car that can favorably be compared to anything on the market. Not everyone cares about Bluetooth (I've never even used it, and I'm a techie), nor do they want to pay for sat/nav (I certainly wouldn't). Both are cheap on the "aftermarket". The real-world fuel economy of the Cobalt XFE is terrible (read recent reviews). In my Astra, I got 42.5 mpg on a recent 25 mile trip. I never thought I would by a car not made in Japan, but this changes everything.
