At a time when the biofuels industry is taking a hit for using normally food staples like corn and sugar for fuel, car makers continue to pursue other means to increase fuel economy.

Now comes a report from Japan that Mazda Motor Corp. and Hiroshima University have partnered to develop a bioplastic. While such technology is not new, both are researching ways to use from non-food products like woodshaving. It is hoped that once this is achieved, the bioplastic will be used in vehicles by 2013.

Researchers from Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology will also be a part of the project.
