It’s funny, but some of us were just thinking that we could get great fuel efficiency with our regular gasoline-powered cars by simply convert them to electric ones.

Well, seems like people heard us.

Advanced Mechanical Products (AMP) of  Cincinnati, Ohio, has come out with a way to convert the Saturn Sky Roadster into an all-electric car. Powered by two electric motors which gets their energy from one lithium-ion battery, they can reach a top speed of 90 miles per hour and can go from 0 to 60 in less than 6 seconds.

The range is said to be about 150 miles on a single charge. AMP claims that it will cost around $0.04 per mile to run the car, compared to $0.54 a mile that  the American Automobile Association says it costs to operate a conventional gasoline car.

The small start up company expects a prototype will be completed in a month.

The cost will be around $50,000 -- the cost of the car and the electric conversion. Advanced Mechanical Products said that it will convert any 2007 and beyond Sky for $25,000. It is said that the first production run will create 300 units.

Hmm. Not bad. About half the price of a Tesla Roadster!
