China and India, with over a third of the world’s population, are the two largest emerging markets. Thus, both represent huge potentials for global automakers.
Earlier in January, the Nano was launched by Tata Motors, the cheapest car in the world at $2,500. The Chinese Chery QQ is the second cheapest car in the world, priced at $4,800. India’s Bajaj Auto has recently joined with Renault-Nissan to launch a small car in the country by 2011 that could compete with the Nano in price.
Now Hyundai Motor intends to join the $5,000 or less car competition by launching its own small car model in China by 2011. The price tag is expected to be about $3,500.
Our take? Don't expect such cars here in the states any time soon. Not only are their engines pathetically weak by our standards, most are too stripped down to pass safety regulations.
