Road Celebrities: Hypermilers

With the cost of a gallon of gas up to $4.00 and no end in sight to the continuous rise, a new phenomenon is now playing the streets of communities all over the country. The phenomenon is called “Hypermilers.” Consisting of drivers who have "re-defined the way we drive" in order to save on gas, they have become celebrities on the road and highway.

The philosophy of Hypermilers has several steps. First, don’t drive aggressively. That means you should never tailgate or constantly accelerate. Never, never “floor the gas pedal.” That pushes more fuel into the engine and keeps it running faster when it is totally unnecessary.

Coast in neutral whenever possible, including red lights. And don’t press the gas pedal down by more than an inch unless you really have to.

Then there are the Hypermilers who take more extreme methods. For example, they like to coast through a stop sign going 7 miles per hour. They also ride very, very close behind semi-trucks to catch the draft and approach exit ramps on highways with the engine off and coasting at 50 miles per hour down a ramp that has a suggested speed of 25 miles per hour.

Whether extreme or cautious, Hypermilers love the competition, and enjoy finding new ways to drive to save on fuel. And then they like to rub their fellow Hypermilers in the face with it. Seems like a whole new sport, doesn’t it?
