Looks like Toyota, getting fed up with the high costs over here in the states, is looking overseas to the lands down under and the land of smiles.
Toyota Motor Corp has announced that it will be manufacturing its popular Toyota Camry Hybrid sedans in Australia and Thailand. The company said that it will produce 9,000 Camry Hybrids a year in Thailand and 10,000 in Australia. It plans to use those countries as a jumping off point to increase sales in new markets.
Australia is particular keen to the idea. According to the Economic Times, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is calling for the revitalization of Australia’s auto industry, which has lost more than 11,000 jobs since 1996. The government has initiated a 500 million Australian dollar fund to assist in the development of green cars in Australia. The hybrid Camry will probably be one of first of many to be built in Australia. Thailand, too, is a growing center of inexpensive automotive development.
