General Motors has announced that it Chevy division will unveil a new compact car this fall, with production to begin early next year.

The new compact will be run by a new 1.4 liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Capable of delivering between 120 to 140 hp, engine will continue the trend with high technology devices, such as direct fuel injection and turbochargers to boost fuel economy and performance. Some sources say it could easily exceed 40 mpg.

The engine will be shared between five models: Chevrolet, Pontiac, Saturn, Opel, and Daewoo.

Sources say GM is retooling one of its plants in Lordstown, Ohio, to produce this new vehicle; although union officials in Lordstown have yet to hear of any GM plans to add a shift. (Fancy that.)

And the Cobalt? Sources state Chevy's entry car may be nearing its demise as GM has not announced its intentions to continue the series through June 2010. They are considering bringing over the mini-Beat car series from Korea over the United States.
