I guess 2008 will go down into automotive history as a buyers’ market. Either companies have purchased car companies or rumors run rampant that such purchases will be taking place.
The latest rumor of the sale of a nameplate involves Lotus, which is owned by Proton. Rumor has it that Proton has received an awful lot of inquiries from other companies to ascertain whether Lotus is available. So pundits are now saying that if Proton is interested in selling Lotus, it will have no trouble doing so.
It is said that about 12 or so companies have shown interest in buying Lotus. This group specifically includes entities in the Middle East with major financial backing and the ability to provide up front capital.
And as Proton talks to these groups, it has not announced, at least publicly, what its intentions are.
