As it currently stands, more people are buying the Smart cars because they’re trendy, careless of the carbon footprint. The toy-like cars are actually fairly expensive for their size. Basic Fortwo models start at around $12,000, with no radio or air-conditioning. The medium range Passion model can cost up to $21,000; and the souped up version with all the goodies—a stylish body kit, twin exhaust system, custom leather seats, Bluetooth navigation, XM radio and iPod hookup—costs $34,905.
Are the micro sized Smart cars really so brainy? Eh. So-so.
The EPA gave it 33/41 mpg for city/highway, comparable to other small cars, but it’s the statement of rejection that matters, the rejection of the SUV/Hummer trend.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Smart its highest ratings for front and side crash protection two weeks ago. A NASCAR steel cage protects the driver in the 8 foot long, 1,800 pound vehicle.
The Smart car can get up to 90mph, although it takes a while to accelerate. The interior isn’t too confining, despite its outward size.
Trivia: The "S" stands for Swatch. The watch company designed the car. The "m" stands for Mercedes-Benz, manufacturer of the Smart. That leaves "art." It's the only car currently in production that's on display at the Museum of Modern Art.
