Ford Motor *** for one, is taking an aggressive path. According to the Detroit News, it has decided to retool some of its truck plants to produce cars. Fast. The plan is to use the turned-around plants to construct models that are now being built in Europe. According to Ford CEO Alan Mulally, the company is taking its que from what is happening in Europe.
A plan will be drafted and introduced in July.
Our take? We're at a historical moment here. Converting a plant -- any plant -- to build another product is always a risky business and Ford's not looking to do some over several months. Could we be seeing the writing on the wall for one -- or more? -- automakers?
