This unique—in the literal sense of the word—1957 Chrysler Diablo will be the highlight of the show. It is considered the most valuable concept car of the late 1950’s.
The then head designer for Chrysler, Virgil Exner, conceived the concept and worked with Italian coachbuilder Ghia who styled on a 1955 Chrysler 300 series chassis. The Chrysler Diablo is one of the largest and most impressive concept cars ever built. It was made as the featured concept car for the 1957 U.S. auto show circuit. Sporting a massive 22 feet in length, the Diablo is something of a monster shark that most people will never see.
The Chrysler Diablo is not just a relic; it is one of the holy grails of automobile relics. It has been featured in prestigious events and museums such as the Cleveland Auto and Aviation Museum, the Petersen Automotive Museum, Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, as well as at such events as the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and New York’s Louis Vuitton Classic. This Monterey event will undoubtedly draw many automobile enthusiasts from around the world who are drooling for the chance to see the one-of-a-kind Diablo. Those with deep pockets will probably be interested as well, although they actually have a chance at taking home the Diablo.
After a near disaster that would have sunk it to the bottom of the ocean, the Chrysler Diabo was prevented from that fate by last minute details. Now a piece of American and Italian history will be up for auction at the Monterey Event which offers the first opportunity for exclusive ownership of this rare piece of human treasure.
