It’s an interesting chase. First, the original equipment manufacturers for the automakers come up with a radio or some other entertainment component. Then there are consumers who want to replace an OEM component with an aftermarket one only to find that the aftermarket version is not compatible to the OEM system. Then the aftermarket manufacturers come up with a kit that makes aftermarket products compatible with the OEM system and everyone is happy.

When Ford Motor Co. introduced its SYNC system it was compatible only with the OEM components that came with the car from the factory. But consumers have had a desire to trade out the OEM radio and still be able to use SYNC. As a result, Metra Electronics, based in Holly Hills, Florida, has introduced a kit that permits the integration of aftermarket radios with Sync.

Metra says that the kit will be available in about 30 days. The price of the kit was not announced.

According to Ford, 105,000 vehicles with Sync have been sold since last October. And it appears that 1 million vehicles with Sync will be sold by spring of 2009.

Our take? The search for fuel efficiency has definitely not impacted Americans' want for personal hi-tech toys.
