One group that many consider to be the enemy is helping with some suggestions for drivers that could help save money. That group is Shell.

Yup. The fuel manufacturer has developed a list of “FuelStretch” tips -- 12 ideas to help drivers save. And, unlike the smoking industry, this one actually works.

The ideas include:

1. Drive smoothly and avoid heavy acceleration or braking. Such a mode of driving can better your gas mileage between 5 percent to 33 percent.
2. A clean air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.
   
3. Keep the engine well tuned. A well running engine can improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
   
4. Inflate your tires to their proper air pressure. This could improve gas mileage by more than 3 percent.
5. Removing excess weight can improve gas mileage.
6. Use the recommended grade of engine oil. Following manufacturer’s recommendations could improve mileage by up to 2 percent. Select motor oil that is marked “Energy Conserving.”
   
7. Use a high quality gasoline. (Editors Note: This does not mean switch to premium.)
   
8. Maintain a constant speed. Using cruise control when possible can assist in doing that.
9. Avoid idling.
   
10. Avoid higher speeds (i.e. above 60 mph).
11. Plan your outings to reduce your trips. This helps the engine run warm and more efficient.
    
12. Buy gas using a rebate credit card. This way you earn rewards with every purchase.
