BMW has introduced a new concept which is a bow to the company’s first and only mid-engine car, the M1, which was introduced 30 years ago. This particular concept, called the M1 Homage, is a design study only meant to pay tribute to the original M1. Still, pundits say it is evidence that BMW plans to release a V10 car to rival Audi’s R8.
The M1 Homage sports a louvered rear window, salad-spinner wheels, and twin BMW roundels on the rear flanks. All of this is from the original M1. The car also has pop up headlights with recessed lamps that are visible only when they are on. Again, this also appeared on the original M1.
Four hundred and fifty M1s were sold 30 some on years ago. The car opened things up for BMW to get into racing. It led to the company participating in Group 5 Silhouette Formula racing. Rules back then said that 400 production models of the car had to have been sold for it to be able to participate in racing. So, that’s what BMW did.
