Volkswagen Golf convertible to return

Sure to be a fixture at Sweet Sixteen parties and Sorority house parking lots, Volkswagen has decided to bring back the storied Golf Cabriolet model during the next model cycle.

The vehicle, slotting below the stylish hardtop convertible Eos, will be launched shortly after the new Golf MK6 in late 2009.

It is unknown at this point whether VW will go name it the Cabriolet like the one based on the MK1 Rabbit or the Cabrio like in later editions. As the Cabriolet was the most successful iteration, what with it littering high school parking lots for much of the 80s, we hope VW will name its new model after the MK1.

The engine lineup should closely mirror that of our Rabbit/Jetta lineup with the 170hp 5 cylinder as standard, and the 197hp 2.0 liter 4 cylinder optional. It is doubtful at this point that VW will make its new diesel optional on the convertible.

One classic design feature that will not be present in the new model is the roll-over hoop over the rear seats. Now there will be state of the art pop up roll over bars behind the rear seats to keep occupants safe in case of an accident. While we applaud the use of the latest safety technology, one of the things that made the Cabriolet unique was that huge rollover bar. It made it look a bit like an Easter basket on wheels.

While the cabriolet never really appealed to much of the male population, the new convertible should make a great new addition to the VW lineup. As Cyndi Lauper once sang during the heyday of the original Cabriolet, “Girls just wanna have fun!”
