HCCI Saturn Aura. First Run's a Little Rough

General Motors continues to showcase its HCCI system the world's press.

For those of you who are not familiar with the system, HCCI, which stands for "Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition," allows a conventional motor to work as both a conventional gas motor, with a spark plug working in conjunction with the 4-strokes, it can also run in a mode like a diesel, in which fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber where the heat of compressing air ignites it instead. In more practical terms to the consumer, this means better fuel economy (GM quotes 15%) while less pollution. Nice.

One of the bloggers over at ecogeek had a chance to drive the prototype. Though apparently there are still tangible “rough spots” when the motor changes its firing type, the motor works equally well in both modes.

It must be known that GM is not the only one pursing the technology.

Our take? The best of both worlds? Oh GM how you spoil us so. Now just make sure it is perfect.
